Mule Deer
If you like hunting Mule Deer then you will truly love hunting these mountain dwelling beauties. Our area enjoys a very healthy Mule Deer population with lots of mature bucks.
In 1997, the Kootenay regional manager took steps to increase the Kootenay Mule Deer population. Average bucks harvested are generally in the 140" to 180" however there is always a chance for that monster trophy 200" class buck.
This is a true wilderness hunt for these old "timberline mossbacks" we all dream about. Mule Deer is a great early season species to hunt during your Elk hunt or Goat hunt as they are found in the same terrain. If your main goal is for a trophy buck then a late season mid - November hunt will be better as the Mule Deer begin their migration route down to specific lower elevations and are in full rut.
A limited number of late season combination trophy Mule/Whitetail Deer hunts are available.
WHITETAIL DEER
Whitetail Deer in our area primarily inhabit river bottoms of the valley floor. Different from any other species of deer, these mountain Whitetail’s are a must on any Whitetail trophy hunters list.
Some excellent bucks are available and early-on success is normally experienced on mixed bag hunts as opportunities present themselves. Best success for mountain Whitetails is late season when the deer are in full rut, making a great combination with Mule Deer. We use tree stands on well used game trails and cutblocks for the serious Whitetail hunter and rattling in bucks is always a thrill and has proven to be effective as well.
